Gaga: Vessel of Irony or Arbiter of Warhol’s Apocalypse

Lady Gaga, more affectionately referred to by some as Overlord Gaga or Master of Satan’s pitchforked tongue, is a nightengale known famously for plucking universal heartstrings with lyrics such as, “Beautiful, dirrty, dirtty, rich, dirrty beautiful”, which I’m pretty sure is the new “duck, duck, goose” in public schools in the Boston suburbs (love you desegregation busing). Other couplets include, “You’ve indicated your interest, I’m educated in sex, yes,” (see the rhyme scheme there?) as well as “shake your kitty” (is that what the kids are calling it these days?) both of which are only two phrases mined from Lady’s poetic wealth. Her music is bubbly, electro but non-threatening, candy coated, and undeniably superficial which begs the question: is she sincere? Is her music mocking pop and in the process becoming pop itself? The satirist becoming the satire? Poor man’s Warhol or antichrist oiling the wheels of the consumer driven machine? Can’t read your poker face.

Exhibit A: Tisch grad, a school where Gaga, according to her (self-written) wikipedia page, “improved her songwriting skills by composing essays and analytical papers focusing on topics such as art, religion and socio-political order.” Hm. I’ve looked high and low in “just dance” and so far no evidence of art, religion, or socio-politcal order. but maybe that’s the point. Don’t think about it… Just dance…it will be okay…just dance.

Exhibit B: Confession. Quote, “When you listen to a song like LoveGame, is it communicating my soul to you? No… I make soulless electronic pop. But when you’re on ecstasy in a nightclub grinding up against someone and my music comes on, you’ll feel soul.” So that’s what I was feeling…soul, haven’t felt that in a while.

Exhibit C:

Exhibit D: “How do I make pop, commercial art be taken as seriously as fine art? That’s what Warhol did.”

Consider art taken seriously.

Exhibit E: If Nokia would connect more people like Gaga and Paris I would seriously consider buying a nokia phone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWF3GhS_WQA

In a world where everything is hyperreal, Gaga is a real artist. Beloved by the masses for mocking everything we love and becoming something we love in return=irony=art=the American Dream. And they said the AD was dead. No one tell the recording academy she’s a “think piece”…they nominated her for a Grammy.
